When starting to use our Program, the first thing to consider in regard to the primary input data is whether the ‘points system’ employed in European League Football (i.e., 3 points for a Win and 1 point for a Draw) is suitable for use within the algorithms our Program employs, or if a change is required. Some people may think that the ‘official points system’ does not properly reflect the fact that (i) a Win at one’s own home venue is easier than a Win at the opponent’s venue and, (ii) a Draw when playing Away is worth more than a Draw achieved at Home. Yet others may feel that the number of goals scored is important too, but perhaps not more so than the difference between the number of goals scored and the number of goals conceded.
We ourselves have opted for slightly modifying the points system for use in calculating more accurately the initial ranking of the teams (the Staying as well as the Incoming Teams). Our decision was made after substantial testing, where we found that giving greater weight to Draws more accurately reduced the level of probability calculated for a Win by the stronger team. But our Program’s Users are free to revert to the officially employed points system if they so choose.
